Inspired by a view from our window on a family trip to the Faroe Islands. This piece is hooked on rug warp using a variety of wool yarns and is framed in an antique Eastern Ontario window frame.

A butterfly stops to take a rest on a pile of autumn-hued maple leaves. This circular piece is hand-hooked on burlap using wool yarn, silk blend yarn, ribbon and novelty yarns. The butterfly is made from recycled leather, some of which is sewn on using recycled caribou sinew. There is also light beading.

The ominous storm clouds hover over the wide expanse of the open fields.
This piece is hand-hooked on burlap. I used a variety of materials including Icelandic wool yarn, alpaca wool yarn (from Newfoundland) and novelty yarns. The foreground and just below the tree line are hooked with strips of recycled and repurposed leather.
This piece marks my first attempt at combining beading with hooking. There is light beading in both the distant trees and in the landscape.

… Icelandic for ‘horse’, which is always a striking feature in any landscape. I saw this horse standing in the sunny fields above the Gulfoss waterfall. The mountains of the interior were silhouetted in this eye-catching deep blue by a passing storm.

Inspired by an early morning photo of the Pangnirtung fjord in Canada’s great white north before the sun had burned away the fog. The combination of the pink shine of the rock being split by the thin layer of fog and then reflected again in the still water gives a feeling of peaceful otherworldliness.

The roads through the Reykjanes Peninsula in southeast Iceland pass through great fields of old, broken lava. The lava rocks are often covered in thick blankets of moss that can take quite surprising colours.

For a good stretch south of Cheticamp on Cape Breton Island, the trees disappear. If you pull off the road, you can look over the cliffs at the waves frothing against the rocks and at houses that look lonely in all of that sky and ocean.

In autumn, one of my favourite walks is through the Mer Bleue bog in Ottawa when the yellow and red leaves cover the ground as thick as snow around the naked trees. On cool days the sun shines bright through the open forest while the distant sky warns of the winter to come.
